How Canonry Got Its Name

People assume the name is religious. A canonry is technically the office of a canon at a cathedral, so the guess is fair. It is not the reference.

The name comes from a line of HTML.

The canonical tag

When the same content is reachable at several URLs, rel="canonical" tells a search engine which one is real. Everything else is a copy. The canonical URL is the version that accumulates the authority, gets indexed, and gets returned. It is a small tag that answers a large question: of all these candidates, which one is the source?

That question did not go away when answer engines arrived. It got more consequential. A search result page shows ten links and lets the reader pick. An AI answer usually names one or two businesses and cites a handful of pages. There is far less room to be the second-best version of yourself.

What we were actually building

We wanted to build the thing that makes a business the source an AI answer resolves to. Not a rank tracker that reports where you landed, but the layer that decides what the model finds, trusts, and repeats when someone asks a question in your category.

That is the canonical tag's job, moved up a level. Instead of picking the authoritative URL for a page, you are establishing the authoritative source for an answer.

The suffix

Canonical gave us the root. The -ry ending does the rest of the work. It is the suffix in foundry, bakery, refinery: a place where something is made or kept.

Canonry is where the canonical version of a business gets built and maintained. That is the whole idea, and it fit in eight letters.

Is the name Canonry religious?

No. The dictionary sense of canonry refers to the office of a cathedral canon, but that is not the reference. The name comes from the canonical tag in HTML, rel=canonical, which tells a search engine which URL is the authoritative version of a page.

What does Canonry mean?

Canonical plus the -ry suffix used in words like foundry and refinery, meaning a place where something is made or kept. Canonry is where the canonical version of a business lives, the source that AI answers resolve to.
